Producing Methods:

The currently established scandium oxide producing methods can be divided into three main blocks: Sc2O3 extraction from from bauxite residue; Sc2O3 extraction from TiO2 acid waste; Sc2O3 extraction from scadium concentrates or nickle-colbalt byproduct. The refined scandia is a primary form of high purity Sc2O3, its production is much larger than high purity scandium oxide (5N/6N) powder, price is lower accordingly.

Application:

Scandium oxide (or scandia) has quite a lot aplications. The emerging applications are fuel cell (SOFC), pure scandium metal and scandium alloys.

Scandium oxide is one of several oxides of rare earth elements with a high melting point. It can be applied in the preparation of other scandium compounds as well as in high-temperature systems (for its resistance to heat and thermal shock), electronic ceramics, and glass composition (as a helper material).

Scandium oxide is also used as evaporation material for optical glass coating, semiconductor coating, as well as variable wavelength solid-state laser, high-definition TV electron gun, and metal halide lamp.

There are also some other applications like single substrate of memory storage devices, solid magnetic cooling medium, inhibitor, additive of samarium-cobalt magnet, x-ray intensifying screen, magnetic cooling medium used in phosphor, neutron-absorbing material in nuclear reactor, magnetic bubble material and intensifying screen material.

FAQs:

Why is scandium a rare earth?

Scandium and yttrium are considered rare-earth elements because they tend to occur in the same ore deposits as the lanthanides and exhibit similar chemical properties, but have different electronic and magnetic properties.

Is scandium a heavy rare earth?

Although it is the lightest of the rare earths, with atomic number 21, it is not classified as a light rare earth metal. ... Like other rare earths, scandium typically exists in a trivalent state, but its chemical and physical properties don't warrant grouping it with either the light rare earths or the heavy rare earths.

Where is scandium found?

However, scandium is distributed sparsely and occurs in trace amounts in many minerals. Rare minerals from Scandinavia and Madagascar such as thortveitite, euxenite, and gadolinite are the only known concentrated sources of this element. Thortveitite can contain up to 45% of scandium in the form of scandium oxide.

What is scandium oxides use for?

Scandium oxide is used in the preparation of other scandium compounds as well as in high-temperature systems (for its resistance to heat and thermal shock), electronic ceramics, and glass composition (as a helper material). Principal uses for scandium oxide are in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC’s), high-strength aluminum alloys, high intensity metal halide lamps, electronics, and laser research.
